Dust in Air

The objectives of ambient air monitoring may include:

  • Compliance with standards or goals,
  • Time trends and patterns,
  • Background data to assess the impact of a proposed activity, or
  • Data for air quality management strategies and programs.

There are several methods for measuring dust or particulate matter in ambient air. Most licences recommend one or a combination of the following tests:

Foreround: Man inspecting contents of a dust bottle taken from dust guage. Background:quarry
Man rinsing funnel from a dust guage into dust bottle. Dust guage in a field. Field Ute.

Dust Deposition Gauges

Measures nuisance dust falling from the air to settle on property in the local vicinity

  • Tests include Insoluble Solids, Combustible Matter and Ash
  • VGT can perform sampling and testing to EPA Approved Methods AM-19, AS3580.10.1
  • Installation of static dust guages

High Volume Air Samplers

  •   Measures particulates suspended in the air by actively drawing air through a filter.

  • May have size selective inlets, so that the filter only receives particulate matter less than 10 micrometres in diameter (PM10) or less than 2.5 micrometres in diameters (PM2.5).  Without the inlet, the Total Suspended Particulates (TSP) are captured.

  • VGT are NATA accredited to test filters for TSP, PM10 and PM2.5 to in-house methods based on AS3580.9 series.

  • VGT can train your staff in the correct weekly collection of filters in accordance with standard and EPA requirements, and calibrate your Sampler to ensure it meets the ongoing compliance requirements of the Australian Standard.

Real Time Samplers

VGT can advise clients on the emerging technology available in real time monitoring of dust in air, with or without weather and noise measuring options.
